November 29th, 2018 – The word of a dead language that NOBODY can translate.

 

The Yaghans, also called Yámana, are the southernmost population on the planet: they live in Tierra del Fuego, the archipelago divided between Argentina and Chile not far from Antarctica. Today the tribe is practically extinct, and estimates suggest that the total number of descendants of the population residing in the area will reach only 1500.

The main work of linguistic treatment of the Yaghan language is due to the reverend and Anglican missionary Thomas Bridges, who in the 1960s spent twenty years in the company of the natives, compiling a Yaghan-English dictionary composed of 32 thousand entries.
