March 15th, 2019 – Alfonso Cuarón got angry with Netflix for the SPANISH subtitles of “Roma”


Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón criticized Netflix for the subtitles for his film Rome, which was distributed on the platform and was highly appreciated by critics. The film was shot in Mexico, with predominantly Mexican actors who speak Mexican Spanish. In the version of the film released in Spain, Netflix added the possibility of watching the film in Castilian, or the Spanish that is spoken in Spain. Cuarón was angry because of this, and described Netflix’s choice to use subtitles in “European” Spanish as “provincial, ignorant and offensive to the Spaniards themselves”.
