Why companies need to relate effectively with partners and build a strong connection between technology and translators

A recent survey conducted by SDL – the Corporate Translation Technology Survey 2017, has interesting results about the importance of the connection between the corporations and their partners (these being translation companies, freelance or in-house translators) and why they need to build a strong relationship between both technology and translators. For corporations, quality in translations is one of the most important assets, but it also implies both a priority and a challenge for many reasons including timing, increasing number of languages to be translated, new technology, lack of qualified translators, and the increasing demand for translations.

Now, it is clear companies have many options to do their translation services, this being through language service providers, freelancers or in-house. Most companies believe that outsourcing is cost-effective giving control over budget but on the other hand, translating in-house give them more quality and consistency and sometimes is more profitable. It is sort of a dilemma in the way that with outsourcing you have an unknown resource probably located elsewhere and with different ways of working, giving project managers more load of work they need to monitor (allocating, tracking and managing). It doesn’t matter if companies prefer in-house support or outsourcing, they still have the challenge to scale at quality.

For the benefit of companies, technology keeps growing fast and there are many resources that could be used to help with this challenge. Companies need to balance not only productivity but also consistency across all projects. A way to help with consistency is through terminology management tools that are designed for the transfer of translation jobs, including resources like termbases and translation memories. These tools help ease the work for project managers, in a way that they centralized the work sharing and automating repetitive tasks. Although this sounds very appealing, not many companies are using terminology management tools, for there is an opportunity to bring technology for the quest for quality at scale.

Companies need to be more open in communicating and sharing information with both in-house or outsource teams, meaning to resolve terminology concerns, review translation quality and correct use of terminology. If communication is efficient enough, the more could be done with existing resources. As a result, companies have an option to be more resourceful, efficient and satisfied the demands for higher quality in translation in a shorter time with technology.
